—The sunlight fell into night once again, and the trickling fountains spurted with water in front of me.

“Bloody Death!” I whipped round, glaring at the glowing windows of the ball inside and heard the faint music of the stringed quartet and flautist swell.

Everyone seemed so calm inside. So at peace… As if world shattering knowledge hadn’t just been revealed.

My heels clicked over the stone path as I started inside.

Bait and Switch

XAVIER

I hurried past the partying guests, heading for the balcony where I last saw Willow stalking out. I was almost there, but a woman slid in front to block my way.

“Howllord Devouh?” the woman questioned.

She was Landish with sun-browned skin and pale orange hair that tumbled in a glossy curtain over her shoulder. Her limbs were draped in a violet gown that was cinched at her waist and hips, a long slit trailing up her stocking-dressed leg.

I craned my neck to look past her. Blast, but this woman was tall. At this rate, I would lose track of Willow. “Sorry, I’ve no time for chatting at the moment. If you’d please…”

Her painted red lips rolled into a smile, moving herself in front of me wherever I stepped. “Howllord, my name is Vanessa Lauranet. I’m with Neverland’s reporting station, channel eight, twenty-four-seven broadcasting of the latest news across, under, and above the globe. I’ll only take a bit of your time—”

“I’ve none to spare, I’m afraid.” I pushed past her. “I must speak with my Relicblood. Now, if you’ll kindly excuse me.”

I didn’t bother to look back at her probably-offended expression and headed for the balcony again. I bumped into the flautist on the way. The musician’s eyes followed me as I left, though they weren’t resentful for me having just run into him. He only grinned, returning to his whimsical playing.

I hurried out to the balcony and looked over the railing, spotting Willow. Thank Bloods, she was walking this way. My feet trotted down the steps while she stormed up them, and I met her half way. “Willow, I need to talk to…”

“Not now, Xavier.” She climbed past me.

I almost stumbled trying to keep pace. “Wait, you need to hear this! I had a vision about this queen and—”

“Xavier, I will hear about it another time.” Her eyes were set hard at her destination. “Right now, I must find Ana.”

“Ana?” I stopped at the top of the steps, calling after her. “Why Ana?”

She didn’t offer me an explanation as she disappeared inside.

Chai flapped down by the railing, cocking his head at me. I felt his concern. He must have likewise felt my distress. I stroked his tattered feathers. “This is not the time for her to be distracted.”

I’d had the vision the moment I touched those suits we were sent. I hadn’t Seen much, but I did see through the queen’s eyes as she sent the servants off to deliver them. She had specifically chosen Alex and my wardrobes to match. And the thoughts that streamed through her mind were indecent fantasies I really shouldn’t have Seen.
